چکیده

Based on the Lighthill–Whitham–Richards (LWR) traffic flow theory, this paper provides alternative methods to compute shockwave speed mainly by using detection data that reflects three states of vehicular presences: vehicles in moving, vehicles stopped, and void of vehicles. As the duration of a state is firmly identified within a cycle, the proposed methods compute shockwave speeds directly by means of Euclidian geometrics on time–space trajectory of shockwaves. This approach is also applicable to congested signal links with a long queue (but a residual queue) beyond detection zone. In addition, given signal timing and the shockwave speeds calculated by the methods, characteristics of arrival traffics, i.e. upstream flow rate and speed, can be predicted before the end of current cycle. It justifies that the methods are capable of whether to extend green phase before next cycle or not and will be a promising tool for real-time operations of signal control. Finally, the predicted shockwave speeds, upstream flow rate, and space mean speed by the proposed method are testified using simulated data from CORSIM. The mean absolute percentage errors of the estimated speeds of forward recovery shockwave and backward forming shockwave are 4.0% and 12.4% respectively. For the predicted flow rate and space mean speed of downstream arrival traffics, the mean absolute percentage errors are 18% and 4%, respectively. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the presented approach. 2014 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

An Integrated Approach for Platoon-based Simulation and Its Feasibility Assessment

Research on developing mathematical and simulative models to evaluate performance of signalized arterials is still ongoing. In this paper, an integrated model (IM) based on Rakha vehicle dynamics and LWR model is proposed. The IM which imitates actuated performance measurement in signalized arterials is described using continuous timed Petri net with variable speeds (VCPN). This enables systema...

Queue Length Estimation Algorithm for Signalized Intersection Using Sectional Travel Time Information

Abstract: The purpose of this research is to develop algorithm calculating the traffic queue length which is main variable for effective operation at signalized intersection. For the methods to calculate the traffic queue length, there are queue theory and shock wave theory. And, the estimation of traffic queue length by existing point detection system utilizes traffic queue theory calculating ...

Real-time queue length estimation for congested signalized intersections

How to estimate queue length in real-time at signalized intersection is a long-standing problem. The problem gets even more difficult when signal links are congested. The traditional input–output approach for queue length estimation can only handle queues that are shorter than the distance between vehicle detector and intersection stop line, because cumulative vehicle count for arrival traffic ...

Roundabout is one of the most effective intersection control methods in the world. Although, they have often been used in Iran, but, the methods which are proposed to analyze roundabouts are very old and new regulations are not implemented for analyzing modern roundabouts. There are strong needs to apply new modern analyzing methods for studying roundabouts in Iran. Also, these methods should b...
